All Ohio Show

The annual All-Ohio Show is one of the most exciting projects that the EdTA Ohio Chapter offers to Thespians in Ohio.  Each registered troupe may send as many inducted thespians to audition/ interview for cast and crew. No more than 6 from any troupe will be offered roles in the cast and no more than 6 will be offered roles on the production team.  Once chosen, cast and crew only have three rehearsal/build weekends and one and a half days of tech/dress rehearsals in which to create an amazing production.  The All-Ohio show is the featured opening show of the EdTA Ohio Chapter State Conference.  The All-Ohio show intends to provide participating students with the experience of working on an advanced level of theatrical production.  Involvement in the All-Ohio show is a special honor for the participants and schools, as well as an unforgettable experience for everyone involved. See below for show specific information.

The 2017 All-Ohio Show is...

(Original Broadway version 1990) Book & Lyrics by Lynn Aherns • Music by Stephen Flaherty

Directed by: Kevin P. Kern, Department of Theatre, University of Mount Union

Synopsis: From the Tony Award-winning songwriting team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Seussical, Ragtime) comes the Olivier Award-winning Once On This Island. This highly original and theatrical Caribbean adaptation of the popular fairy tale The Little Mermaid garnered eight Tony nominations for its Broadway run, including Best Musical, Book and Score. Ti Moune, a peasant girl, rescues a wealthy boy from the other side of the island, Daniel, with whom she falls in love. Unbeknownst to Ti Moune, the pompous gods who preside over the island make a bet with one another over which is stronger, love or death, the stakes being Ti Moune's life. When she pursues Daniel, who has returned to his people, Ti Moune is shunned because of her lowly status. Her determination and capacity to love, though, is not enough to win Daniel's heart and Ti Moune pays the ultimate price; but the gods turn Ti Moune into a tree that grows so strong and so tall, it breaks the wall that separates the societies and ultimately unites them.

Director’s Vision: This inspiring musical, based on Rosa Guy's fable "My Love, My Love" will be done as a true ensemble piece, with most of the cast playing multiple roles both animate and inanimate. The play requires performers who are comfortable with rapidly switching roles, while bringing honesty to each moment. There is no glitz or dazzling technology in ...Island, just simple storytelling and beautiful calypso music. The choreography is vibrant, tribal, and is perhaps best summed up by a line in the opening number: "...we are dancing just to stay alive." Once On This Island is about the triumph of love over the barriers of tradition, class and race. It asks us to reevaluate what we believe about fate, privilege, sacrifice, and love, and as the story unfolds, we see pieces of ourselves in the characters on the island. Because of those broad, universal themes, our story can be told regardless of a cast member's race, gender, or ethnic origin. It's a story that we need to be reminded of, now more than ever.
