The Ohio Thespian State Conference is the highlight of each academic year. More than 1,500 Thespians from across Ohio gather in one location for an unforgettable weekend celebrating theatre and theatre education. Attendees have the opportunity to participate in a variety of workshops ranging from playwriting, puppetry, and dance to college auditions, LGBTQ issues and professional development for educators. Throughout the weekend, troupes stage performances carefully selected from high schools across Ohio, creating a unique opportunity for students and teachers alike. State conference is also home to the famous All-Ohio Show.
To make the most of your Conference experience, plan to attend a variety of shows and workshops and network with the people you meet. In addition, Please take advantage of the many opportunities available to troupes (seeing the All-Ohio production, bringing a Marathon cutting or one-act to share, or creating a display) and to individuals (Individual Events and Bob Fose Memorial Scholarship competition).
The annual All-Ohio Show is one of the most exciting projects that the EdTA: Ohio Chapter offers. Each registered troupe may send as many inducted thespians to audition/ interview for cast and crew. No more than 6 from any troupe will be offered roles in the cast and no more than 6 will be offered roles on the production team. Once chosen, cast and crew only have three rehearsal/build weekends and one and a half days of tech/dress rehearsals in which to create an amazing production. The All-Ohio show is the featured opening show of the EdTA Ohio Chapter State Conference. The All-Ohio show intends to provide participating students with the experience of working on an advanced level of theatrical production. Involvement in the All-Ohio show is a special honor for the participants and schools, as well as an unforgettable experience for everyone involved. See below for show specific information.

(Original Broadway version 1990) Book & Lyrics by Lynn Aherns • Music by Stephen Flaherty
Directed by:Kevin P. Kern, Department of Theatre, University of Mount Union
Synopsis:From the Tony Award-winning songwriting team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Seussical, Ragtime) comes the Olivier Award-winning Once On This Island. This highly original and theatrical Caribbean adaptation of the popular fairy tale The Little Mermaid garnered eight Tony nominations for its Broadway run, including Best Musical, Book and Score. Ti Moune, a peasant girl, rescues a wealthy boy from the other side of the island, Daniel, with whom she falls in love. Unbeknownst to Ti Moune, the pompous gods who preside over the island make a bet with one another over which is stronger, love or death, the stakes being Ti Moune’s life. When she pursues Daniel, who has returned to his people, Ti Moune is shunned because of her lowly status. Her determination and capacity to love, though, is not enough to win Daniel’s heart and Ti Moune pays the ultimate price; but the gods turn Ti Moune into a tree that grows so strong and so tall, it breaks the wall that separates the societies and ultimately unites them. -MTIShows.com
Director’s Vision:This inspiring musical, based on Rosa Guy’s fable “My Love, My Love” will be done as a true ensemble piece, with most of the cast playing multiple roles both animate and inanimate. The play requires performers who are comfortable with rapidly switching roles, while bringing honesty to each moment. There is no glitz or dazzling technology in …Island, just simple storytelling and beautiful calypso music. The choreography is vibrant, tribal, and is perhaps best summed up by a line in the opening number: “…we are dancing just to stay alive.” Once On This Island is about the triumph of love over the barriers of tradition, class and race. It asks us to reevaluate what we believe about fate, privilege, sacrifice, and love, and as the story unfolds, we see pieces of ourselves in the characters on the island. Because of those broad, universal themes, our story can be told regardless of a cast member’s race, gender, or ethnic origin. It’s a story that we need to be reminded of, now more than ever.

Shark in the Bathtub by Carla Hosein
Directed by Theresa Stafford
Marathon Performance | 9:15 pm | Choir Room
Akron School for the arts at Firestone CLC, Troupe# 5570
An hour before acting class, Ashley and Richard meet to rehearse their scene. It calls for them to kiss five times, but whenever they get to the first kiss they break character to argue – about Richard’s lateness, about Ashley’s attitude, about who chose this scene and why. Does one of them have a secret crush on the other? They’ll have to rehearse the entire scene to find out – if they can make it that far.
Hidden truths are revealed in this Seinfeld-esque romantic comedy centered on a couple’s conversation. The couple, an artist and a psychiatrist, begin trading barbs and observations laced with sarcasm, but the argument soon develops into a sweet profession of their love for one another. This wonderfully absurd conversation that comes full-circle is without depth or significance but is interesting nonetheless – much like a shark in the bathtub.
