President George W. Bush today announced the recipients of the 2008 National Medal of Arts. Nine medals were presented by the President and Mrs. Laura Bush in an East Room ceremony at the White House

Young people from communities across the U.S., China, Egypt and Mexico who engage in after-school arts and humanities programs that promote educational achievement and productive lives were honored by Mrs. Laura Bush at a ceremony for the 2008 Coming Up Taller Awards in the East Room of the White House on Friday, November 14.

To celebrate the inaugural NEA Opera Honors class, the NEA commsisioned these short films. Each honoree is highlighted in a video tribute, an extended interview, and a conversation with a fellow opera luminary.

Conductor JoAnn Falletta and country songwriter and singer Lee Greenwood have been confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve on the National Council on the Arts, the advisory body of the National Endowment for the Arts. The confirmation follows their nomination by President George W. Bush to serve on this advisory body to the Arts Endowment.

The NEA has announced the first seven selections for the NEA New Play Development Program. The two NEA Outstanding New American Play selections will receive $90,000 each to support advanced development activities, culminating in a full production of each play. The five NEA Distinguished New Play Development Projects will receive $20,000 each to support early development activities for a new play.

Columbia University's Graduate Journalism School has announced that 23 critics, editors, reporters, and producers have been chosen to participate as fellows in the fifth annual NEA Arts Journalism Institute in Classical Music and Opera.

The National Endowment for the Arts will recognize the recipients of the first individual NEA honorific in more than a quarter century: the NEA Opera Honors, created to celebrate the art and artists of opera in America. The inaugural event will take place on Friday, October 31 at 8 p.m. in the Sidney Harman Hall of the Harman Center for the Arts, Washington, DC.

The NEA is partnering with the Library of Congress and Wake Forest University Press to host an evening of readings by poets Chris Agee and Sinead Morrissey on Thursday, October 2, 2008. The reading celebrates the release of the anthology The New North: Contemporary Poetry from Northern Ireland.

The NEA announced the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs as the recipient of the 2008 National Accessibility Leadership Award/grant for their outstanding accessibility work.
